When did the Ugandan Diaspora Community begin using social media as a tool for communication and activism ?
You don’t need a corporation or a marketing company to brand you now: you can do it yourself. You can establish who you are with a social media following.It gives us the opportunity to humanize our communications and make our ourselves more approachable. Why are we trying to measure social media like a traditional channel, anyway? Social media touches every facet of business and is more an extension of good business ethics

The Ugandan Diaspora Community began using social media as a tool to stay connected and informed. With the use of Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms Ugandans can keep up with family events back home in Uganda. It is also a place where people from the diaspora community can voice their opinions about what’s happening in Uganda or share thoughts they have on current affairs such as politics.

The power of social media has helped create new ways for people who are not able to travel back home often because of financial constraints or other limitations to still feel like they are part of society at large by being able to connect with others who live abroad through these online platforms. The rapid development and growth in digital technologies has significantly transformed global and local patterns of communication and dissolved continental and regional boundaries. These innovations have included the World Wide Web, mobile phones and many online social networks.

Social media for example, has transformed and enhanced how families and friends communicate with each other. While a digital divide continues to exist between global north and south, social media has gained currency and popularity at a faster rate than expected in Africa, reaching rural and most remote villages. Most people can now boast of having a mobile phone regardless of where they live and work since Social media provides a fast, cost-effective, and more transparent communication alternative which overcomes limitations that hindered progress in the past.

What are some of the common platforms use by members of this community to connect with one another ?

Ugandans who have emigrated abroad for work or study reasons are using social media as a tool to stay connected with their homeland. They can use Facebook, Twitter and other platforms that allow them to keep up-to-date on what’s happening back home in Uganda while also giving Ugandan expatriates the opportunity to voice their opinions about local affairs from afar.
